Memorial Day History & Floral Traditions

Memorial Day - Salute to the Troops

Memorial Day - Salute to the TroopsMemorial Day 2017 is on Monday, May 29th, 2017.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday that is observed each year on the final Monday of May. The history of Memorial Day goes all the way back to the Civil War. The purpose of the day was to remember the fallen Union soldiers. Southern women and school children decorated Confederate graves with flowers during and after the war; however, each region designated a different date for Memorial Day.

By the 20th century, Memorial Day was extended to honor all American soldiers that have died at war. The tradition of decorating the graves of soldiers who have died for our country continues today. All around the United States, floral arrangements are used as decorations for Memorial Day. Many families preserve the history of Memorial Day by having personal celebrations to recognize the soldiers that have given their lives for their country’s principles. Continue Reading…

Petal Talk Chats with Stafford, VA Florist, Develyn Reed

Florist Develyn Reed posing with floral arrangement

How did you get into the flower business and what do you love best about being a florist?

I’ve only been in the floral business for about 6 years. My in-laws own Achara Florist, and needed someone to work in the gift part of the store. Once I started working with some of the amazing designers, I began to design a little bit myself. I found that I love creating beautiful flower arrangements…and the rest is history!

What are your favorite flowers?

Gosh, I love them all! There are too many to count. But if I had to name a few, they would have to be peonies, hydrangeas and stock. Peonies smell incredible and are just so beautiful. They take center stage in whatever you put them in. Hydrangeas are nice, big gorgeous flowers that I love to use in wedding work. They make bridal bouquets nice and full, and they go with other flowers so well. Stock is another one of my favorites because it comes in all different colors, and has a wonderful fragrance and big, thick blooms that are stunning in everything. Continue Reading…

All About Hanukkah

December 7, 2016

What is Hanukkah?

Hanukkah is an eight-day religious holiday celebrated by people of the Jewish faith. Each year in mid-December, Jews all over the world celebrate the Festival of Lights which commemorates a Jewish victory over the Greeks 2000 years ago. In 165 BCE, when the Jews came to rededicate the Temple they had reclaimed, they found only one small flask of oil with which to light their Menorah, or lamp. This flask contained enough oil to last for just one day, yet the lamp burned for eight days, the same exact amount of time it takes to completely prepare the sacred oil for a new ceremony. This is considered the miracle of Hanukkah.

What is Hanukkah and how is it celebrated?

Hanukkah Traditions

The Menorah During the festival of Hanukkah, menorahs are lit for eight days to commemorate each night the original lamp burned. There are nine candles on the menorah, one for each night and one in the center, which is used to light the others. Each evening, families gather at nightfall to rekindle menorah flames, rededicate themselves to their faith, and to share in the festive meals. Blessings are sung as the candles are lit. Petal Talk Chats With Gresham, OR Florist Wendell Cook

September 29, 2016

1-800-flowers-nancys-florist-wendell-cookHow did you get into the flower business and what do you love best about being a florist?

Growing up, I had a great interest in art and music. I attended the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, completing a two-year course featuring floral design and horticulture. After graduating with an associate’s degree, I was immediately hired at a large florist shop and enjoyed designing.

What are your favorite flowers?

Snapdragons, alstroemeria and Hawaiian tropicals – anthuriums & ginger

Can you tell us a little bit about Gresham / what is your favorite thing about living there?

Gresham has a population of approximately 105,000 and is the fourth largest city in Oregon. Despite its size, it has many small town features that locals enjoy such as the Teddy Bear parade, art shows, car shows and music in the park. Gresham has a very active Chamber of Commerce and many shopping opportunities, limiting the need to go out of town to shop. The weather is very favorable—we may have occasional rain, but we don’t have to shovel it!florist-holding-flower-basket-arrangement Continue Reading…
