March 20th marks the first day of spring, and that means warmer weather, barbeques, and tulips in full bloom! Cities and towns all around the world have already started gearing up for festivals honoring spring’s favorite flower. This uniquely colored flower only pops up for a few weeks every year, so you’ll want to make the most of this year’s tulip bloom by visiting some of the most beautiful tulip festivals.

Keukenhof

Where: Holland
When: March 23rd – May 21st

Known as “The most beautiful spring garden in the world,” the Keukenhof holds more than 800 varieties of tulips and a total of 7 million bulbs! But amazingly, there’s even more to see here than just the beautiful flowers. Visitors can also witness a collection of artwork and plethora of outdoor cultural events. And have no fear, children are welcome here! If you’re out with the family, the Keukenhof also has a treasure hunt, petting zoo, maze and playground to keep your little ones entertained for hours.

Canadian Tulip Festival

Where: Ottawa Canada
When: May 12th – May 22nd

Since 1953, the city of Ottawa has honored and celebrated its flower, the tulip, with the Canadian Tulip Festival. The tulip holds special meaning to Canada, as it symbolizes the strong friendship and bond forged between them and the Netherlands during World War II. As the world’s largest tulip festival, it’s no surprise you’re sure to find a lot of colorful tulips – but you’ll also find so much more. You’ll also get a chance to experience authentic Dutch culture, an International Pavilion, music and fireworks.

Tesselaar Tulip Festival

Where: Silvan, Australia
When: September 15th – October 8th

This festival is home to more than 40 nurseries and plant growers so you’ll find an amazing mixture of both small and large flowers. This festival also showcases live entertainment, a multicultural food exhibition, and a sculpture display. When you leave, you may even be inspired to start your own garden! The festival will host several interviews, discussions and lectures with top growers in the country on how to best care for a variety of flowers and plants. And what really sets this festival apart from others is that you can actually pick and purchase some of the flowers on display.

Srinagar Tulip Festival

Where: Kashmir, India
When: March 25th – March 30th

What started out as a way to boost tourism in a small town in 2007, quickly became one of South Asia’s most popular and cherished events. With over 60 varieties of tulips, visitors have said that it looks like the streets are lined with carpets rather than individual flowers. While you’re there, stop by the many folk dance performances that happen right in the streets. You can also enjoy the different Kashmiri cuisine that is prepared and sold locally.

Mount Vernon Washington Tulip Festival

Pella Tulip Time

Where: Pella, Iowa
When: May 4th – May 6th

For three days every year, citizens of Pella travel back in time and wear traditional Dutch attire, eat Dutch food and celebrate the history of the tulip. Join them in celebrating the 82nd anniversary of their most colorful festival. You can also watch as floats travel down the tulip-lined streets in the annual Parade of Tulips.

Where: Albany, New York
When: May 13th & May 14th

New York City may be known as the concrete jungle, but it’s all flowers and greenery up in Albany! The Tulip Festival is Albany’s signature event in the spring and draws thousands of people in every year. In addition to the 140,000 tulips on display, the festival also features 100 artists, thousands of handmade crafts, delicious food, the KidZone, and two stages of non-stop dance and musical entertainment.

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

Where: Skagit Valley, Washington
When: February 9th – May 10th

Since 1983, the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival has celebrated the spring season and the many flowers that bloom during it. More than 1 million visitors come every year for the month-long celebration. Throughout the town, there are a combined 300 tulip covered acres. Attractions also include the Tulip Festival Street Fair, Tulip Parade, dozens of art shows, and the Quilt Walk.
